Chimeneas

A chimenea is a Mexican-style, free-standing, portable outdoor fireplace that may be constructed of either metal or clay materials.

These portable outdoor fireplaces are imported from Mexico. The safety of these fireplaces being used in Canada has not been evaluated; therefore, all buyers should be aware of the potential hazards of open air fires.

The Alberta Building Code and Fire Code do not regulate these fireplaces. However, outdoor backyard fire pits are likely to be regulated by local municipal bylaws.

Most municipalities have bylaws that prescribe the distances between a backyard fire pit and buildings, property lines and combustible materials as well as having proper screens for spark arresters.

Persons using a chimenea in their yard need to check with their local fire department on how to comply with the local bylaws.

Safety tips

  • Do not use flammable liquids such as gasoline or lighter fluid to kindle a fire.
  • Do not use chimeneas on or near a wooden deck, fence or combustible vegetation.
  • Keep children and pets away from hot chimeneas.
  • Check the chimenea for cracks or wear and tear that may cause the fireplace to collapse.
  • Follow instructions provided with the units.
